If you’re frustrated by flaws in your smile, you may be considering porcelain veneers as a solution. Your dentist attaches these thin, durable shells to the front of your teeth to hide imperfections like gaps, chips, cracks, and discoloration. They can last 15+ years with the right care, so before proceeding with treatment, it’s important that you fully understand what you’re signing up for. Keep reading to learn 4 facts about veneers so you can have peace of mind knowing that you’re making a well-informed decision!

Fact #1: They Require Preparation

Many patients don’t realize that for their veneers to align with their other teeth and gums, a small portion of their natural enamel must be removed. Otherwise, they’ll appear bulky and are more likely to develop gum disease. The protective outer layer doesn’t grow back, so this adjustment is permanent. It’s important to note, however, that a portion no thicker than a contact lens is removed, which is much less than other treatments like dental crowns, for example.

Fact #2: They Resist Stains

No one wants to have unsightly, off-colored teeth but after years of consuming foods and drinks that stain, they’re bound to look drab. While it’s possible to remove external discoloration with whitening treatments, not all visible splotches can be fixed this way. Genetics, prescription medications, or other causes can leave your teeth looking yellow from the inside out. Fortunately, veneers can be customized to your ideal shade to mask blemishes.

Fact #3: They Can Break

Veneers are coated with a glaze so durable that it’s considered chip-resistant, but that doesn’t mean they’re invincible. If you grind your teeth, for example, the added pressure can lead to breaks or fractures. Furthermore, biting hard objects like pen caps or fingernails can damage them, too. While they do shield your pearly whites from sustaining further injury, you still need to be aware of what you put into your mouth.

Fact #4: Veneers Are Cosmetic

Though they do serve a practical purpose by providing additional support, veneers are considered a cosmetic procedure because the primary purpose is to improve your appearance. Because of this, they’re not included on many dental insurance plans. If you’re not sure what your insurance includes, feel free to call the insurance company and they can answer your questions.

If you have more questions that weren’t answered here, feel free to call your dentist. They’re familiar with the ins and outs of the procedure and want you to feel confident that you’re making the best decision for your unique oral healthcare needs.
