Cosmetic dentistry has taken the world by storm—in fact, it’s estimated that the demand for cosmetic dental work has doubled within the last five or so years, meaning more people than ever before are finally achieving the smiles they’ve always dreamed of! But if you’re thinking about receiving cosmetic treatment, you might be on the fence about two common solutions: veneers and cosmetic bonding. After all, both have their uses and merits, so how are you supposed to know which is the better option for your smile? Here are a few considerations to keep in mind to help you make an informed decision!

Veneers vs. Cosmetic Bonding

Veneers and cosmetic bonding are both capable of improving a wide range of common cosmetic concerns including tooth discoloration, cracks, chips, gaps, and more. Veneers are thin, custom-made shells of porcelain that are bonded to the outer surfaces of compromised teeth to mask flaws. They can last for 10 to 15 years with proper care. Cosmetic bonding, on the other hand, involves a composite resin being applied to the affected teeth, to similarly mask flaws; however, it tends to require touchups every few years. Both can produce incredibly beautiful and natural-looking results, and relatively quickly!

Preparation, Procedure, & Cost

There are some key differences between how these two procedures are carried out. Veneers involve a thin layer of enamel being removed from the teeth being treated, before the custom coverings are bonded on. Sometimes this can take multiple visits, and the mouth often needs to be numbed. Cosmetic bonding is very straightforward though and can quickly be achieved in a single visit with little hassle. Cost is a critical factor for many patients when choosing between these two treatments; while cosmetic bonding is generally more affordable upfront, veneers tend to be more expensive due to the materials used and the process of applying them. However, considering their longevity, veneers are considered cost-effective in addition to being incredibly versatile.

Which Is Right for Me?

In the end, the decision between these two amazing treatments will boil down to your preferences, your budget, and your dentist’s expert opinion. If you want to correct an issue with a single tooth or fix something like a tiny chip, cosmetic bonding often makes the most sense. But if you want to transform your smile a great deal, veneers are usually recommended.
